Your layover plan

Arrive & Immigration
~59 min · MEX
  • Follow signs to passport control immediately on landing
  • Have onward boarding pass and hotel/address ready for questions
  • Average 59 min for international arrivals. Mexican nationals faster. International line can reach 60+ min during peak times (8-11 AM, 5-8 PM). Generally straightforward processing.
Transit into the city
30 min

Airport taxis are metered and safe (buy ticket at official booth inside terminal). Uber available from Departures level. Metro Line 5 is cheap ($0.25) but complex and crowded - taxi recommended for layovers.

Explore Mexico City
~2h 6m of free time
Still too tight. Even with fast immigration, Mexico City's traffic makes the 25-40 min taxi ride risky. The city is incredible but save it for a longer stop.
Return to MEX
30 min back to airport
  • Leave enough buffer - trains run to a schedule and can be delayed
  • Buy your return ticket in advance if possible
  • Set an alarm 55 min before your departure gate closes
Back through security
~25 min buffer before gate
  • Re-entry security at MEX typically takes 10-20 min
  • Check your gate - it may have changed while you were out
  • Liquids bought in the city cannot pass security - finish or bin them

What you need to know

Currency
Mexican peso (MXN, $). Cards accepted at most restaurants and hotels, carry cash for taxis and markets. Skip airport exchange booths and use bank ATMs instead.
Language
Spanish. English is spoken at the airport and in tourist areas (Centro Histórico, Roma, Condesa, Polanco), limited elsewhere.
Visa
Most Western passports (US, Canada, UK, EU, Japan, Australia) get 180 days visa-free. A tourist card (FMM) is required and normally issued on arrival; keep it with your passport. Verify before travel, visa rules change.
Transit
Metro Line 5 from MEX Terminal 1 to Pantitlán (6 min), then Line 1 west to Centro Histórico, about 45 min total for MXN 5. Authorized airport taxi (buy a ticket at the counter inside arrivals) runs around MXN 300–400 to the centre.
Weather
Subtropical highland, mild year-round with daytime highs of 20–26°C. Rainy season is May through October with short afternoon storms. November through April is dry and the best window for a layover.
Tipping
Expected. 10–15% at sit-down restaurants, MXN 10–20 for taxi drivers and baggage porters, round up for short cab rides.
Emergency
911 (universal — police, fire, ambulance). Tourist police patrol Centro Histórico and can help in English.
Time Zone
CST (UTC-6). Mexico abolished daylight saving time across most of the country in 2022, so clocks stay on CST year-round.
