Very tight window. Only attempt the city if you have UAE e-Gate access and a single focused plan.

  • Metro Red Line from Airport Terminals 1/2/3 to ADCB or BurJuman: 25 min, AED 7, runs every 5-8 min (closed 2am-5am)
  • Dubai Mall sits next to Burj Khalifa Metro stop — ground floor food court or a fast Souk browse
  • Be back at the airport entrance 90 min before departure — DXB is large and security can queue
Return to DWC
55 min back to airport
  • Leave enough buffer - trains run to a schedule and can be delayed
  • Buy your return ticket in advance if possible
  • Set an alarm 75 min before your departure gate closes
Back through security
~20 min buffer before gate
  • Re-entry security at DWC typically takes 10-20 min
  • Check your gate - it may have changed while you were out
  • Liquids bought in the city cannot pass security - finish or bin them

What you need to know

Currency
UAE Dirham (AED). $1 ≈ AED 3.67 (pegged to USD, stable since 1997). Cards accepted nearly everywhere, including the metro, taxis, and the Gold Souk. Carry AED 20-50 in small notes for tips and independent cabs. ATMs sit inside every DXB terminal; Emirates NBD and Mashreq have the lowest fees for foreign cards.
Language
Arabic is the official language, but English is the working language across DXB, Dubai Metro, hotels, restaurants, and taxis. All signage is bilingual (Arabic and English). You will not need any Arabic to get through a layover.
Visa
Free 30-day visa on arrival at DXB for US, UK, Australian, Canadian, Japanese, Singaporean, and most Asia-Pacific passport holders. EU citizens, Norway, Switzerland, Russia, South Korea, and Brazil: free 90-day visa on arrival. Passport must be valid 6+ months. Indian nationals with a valid US/UK/EU visa or residency: free 14-day visa on arrival. GCC citizens: free movement. Verify before travel. Visa rules change.
Transit
Dubai Metro Red Line runs from DXB Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 straight to Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall station in 25 min for AED 5-10 (~$2). Terminal 2 connects via free shuttle to Terminal 1. Trains every 5-10 min; service is 05:00-00:00 Sat-Wed and until 01:00 Thu-Fri. Taxi from DXB to downtown: 20-30 min, AED 60-80 (~$16-22) off-peak. Careem and Uber both work. Friday prayer (12:00-13:30) causes brief downtown traffic spikes.
Weather
Hot desert climate. Summer (Jun-Sep): 38-45°C (100-113°F) with high humidity; outdoor time is uncomfortable after 10:00. Winter (Dec-Feb): 18-25°C (64-77°F), sunny, ideal. November through March is the sweet spot for sightseeing. Metro, malls, and taxis are strongly air-conditioned year-round, so pack a light layer.
Tipping
A 10% service charge is usually included at sit-down restaurants; an extra 5-10% in cash for good service is appreciated but optional. Taxi drivers: round up to the nearest AED 5-10. Hotel porters: AED 5-10 per bag. Airport porters: AED 10. No tipping expected at fast casual counters, coffee shops, or the metro.
Emergency
Police: 999. Ambulance: 998. Fire: 997. Tourism hotline: 800-DUBAI (800-38224). DXB has a tourist police desk in Terminal 3 arrivals. Dubai ranks among the safest major cities globally. Public behavior laws are strict: no drunkenness outside licensed venues, no public displays of affection, and photograph people (especially women) only with consent.
Time Zone
Gulf Standard Time (GST), UTC+4. No daylight saving. 3 hours ahead of London in UK winter, 4 hours ahead in UK summer. 8 hours ahead of New York in US winter, 7 hours in US summer. Most shops open 10:00-22:00 daily; malls run until 00:00 Thu-Sat. Friday is the quiet morning in the UAE.
