Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC), also known as Dubai World Central, is Dubai’s second airport, located out in Dubai South roughly 50 km southwest of Downtown Dubai and the Burj Khalifa. For now it is a compact, single-terminal operation and the home of low-cost and charter flying in the emirate, with carriers such as Wizz Air, flydubai, and others using it. It is far smaller and quieter than the main Dubai International, but a huge multi-year expansion is under way with the goal of eventually making it one of the largest airports in the world.

Getting to Dubai

DWC is a fair way from the city, so plan your transfer. Public transport centres on RTA buses, and the F55 express bus links the airport to Ibn Battuta Metro Station in around 40 minutes, where you can join the Dubai Metro Red Line to reach much of the city, making the total journey roughly an hour. There is also an N55 night bus stop just outside the terminal, signposted from baggage claim. Taxis and private transfers will take you door to door in around 40 to 45 minutes depending on traffic, and are the simplest option if you have luggage or are travelling late.

Inside the terminal

The single terminal has one large hall giving access to all gates, so it is very easy to navigate. Despite its size you will find the essentials well covered, including free wifi, a generous Dubai Duty Free store, a food court with a decent spread of options, spacious restrooms, and the premium Marhaba Lounge if you want somewhere more comfortable to wait. It is calm and uncrowded compared with the main airport, which many travellers appreciate.

Layovers and connections

Because DWC is smaller and geared toward low-cost carriers, big timed connections are less common here than at a full network hub, and many tickets are separate rather than through-checked. If you do have a long enough layover and want to head into the city, remember the airport’s distance means transfers eat into your time, so be realistic. Check your UAE entry requirements, and leave a solid buffer for the return trip, security, and reaching your gate.

Use the tools above to check whether your layover is long enough to leave, and how the transit, immigration, and security timings add up for DWC.
