Your layover plan

Arrive & Immigration
~35 min · HKT
  • Follow signs to passport control immediately on landing
  • Have onward boarding pass and hotel/address ready for questions
  • Immigration averages 15 to 30 min, but November through March peak season and clusters of European arrivals can push queues past 60 min. No public eGate access; a paid Fast Track service clears arrivals in 5 to 10 min.
Transit into the city
45 min

Phuket Smart Bus from the ground floor of the international terminal stops at Patong, Kata, and Karon for 170 THB, roughly hourly between 07:00 and 21:00. Metered taxis from the arrivals hall are 650 to 800 THB plus a 100 THB airport fee; Grab is typically 750 to 1,250 THB depending on demand.

We recommend you stay airside: Phuket Airport transfers take time and traffic is variable.
Return to HKT
45 min back to airport
  • Leave enough buffer - trains run to a schedule and can be delayed
  • Buy your return ticket in advance if possible
  • Set an alarm 80 min before your departure gate closes
Back through security
~35 min buffer before gate
  • Re-entry security at HKT typically takes 10-20 min
  • Check your gate - it may have changed while you were out
  • Liquids bought in the city cannot pass security - finish or bin them

What you need to know

Currency
Thai Baht (THB). Cards accepted in resorts, malls, and tourist restaurants; carry cash for street food, songthaews, and night markets. ATMs charge a 220 THB foreign-card fee, so withdraw larger amounts at once.
Language
Thai. English is widely spoken in Patong, Phuket Town, and resort areas; less common with tuk-tuk and songthaew drivers outside those zones.
Visa
Visa-exempt for 93 nationalities including US, UK, EU, Canada, Australia, and Japan for up to 60 days. All arrivals must file the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) online within 72 hours before landing. Verify before travel, visa rules change.
Transit
No rail link. Phuket Smart Bus runs HKT to Patong via Surin and Kamala in about 1h 30m for 170 THB, roughly hourly from 07:00 to 21:00. Metered airport taxis are 650 to 800 THB plus a 100 THB airport fee and take 45 to 60 min outside rush hour.
Weather
Tropical monsoon, hot and humid year round at 28 to 32C. November through March is dry season and the best window for a layover; May through October brings heavy rain and choppy seas.
Tipping
Not expected. Rounding up taxi fares and leaving 20 to 50 THB at sit-down restaurants is appreciated; higher-end hotels and resort restaurants often add a 10 percent service charge already.
Emergency
191 (police, general emergencies). 1669 for ambulance, 199 for fire. Dial 1155 for the Tourist Police; English-speaking operators handle theft, scams, and lost passports.
Time Zone
ICT (UTC+7). No daylight saving time.
