Your layover plan

Arrive & Immigration
~25 min · DMK

45 min

Explore Bangkok
~2h 15m of free time
We recommend you stay airside: Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi is distant and traffic is unpredictable; Don Mueang is closer but still risky.
Return to DMK
45 min back to airport
  • Leave enough buffer - trains run to a schedule and can be delayed
  • Buy your return ticket in advance if possible
  • Set an alarm 65 min before your departure gate closes
Back through security
~20 min buffer before gate
  • Re-entry security at DMK typically takes 10-20 min
  • Check your gate - it may have changed while you were out
  • Liquids bought in the city cannot pass security - finish or bin them

What you need to know

Currency
Thai Baht (฿ / THB). Cards accepted at malls, hotels, and mid-range restaurants. Street food and small shops are cash only, so pull THB from a bank ATM (better rates than airport exchange).
Language
Thai. English is common at the airport, major hotels, and tourist neighbourhoods; limited on public buses and in local markets.
Visa
Most Western passports (US, UK, EU, Canada, Australia) get 60 days visa-free under the Thailand 93-country exemption scheme updated in 2024. Visa on arrival available for some other nationalities. Verify before travel, visa rules change.
Transit
Airport Rail Link from BKK (Suvarnabhumi) to Phaya Thai BTS in 30 min, every 10 to 15 min, 45 THB. Metered taxis run 300 to 400 THB plus a 50 THB airport surcharge and tolls. From DMK (Don Mueang), the A1 bus reaches Mo Chit BTS in 30 min for 30 THB.
Weather
Tropical, hot year-round with a wet season May through October and cooler dry weather November through February. November to February is the best window for a layover stopover.
Tipping
Not expected. Rounding up is common, and leaving 20 to 50 THB at sit-down restaurants is appreciated. Mid and high-end restaurants often add a 10 percent service charge to the bill.
Emergency
191 (police). 1669 for ambulance and medical. 199 for fire. 1155 for Tourist Police (English-speaking).
Time Zone
ICT (UTC+7). No daylight saving time.
