Arrive & Immigration
~25 min · MEL
Follow signs to passport control immediately on landing
Have onward boarding pass and hotel/address ready for questions
SmartGate automated processing is available for Australian, NZ, US, UK, Canadian, French, Irish, Japanese, and several other eligible passports. Non-SmartGate travellers queue at standard desks, typically 20 to 40 min at peak arrival banks.
Transit into the city
30 min
SkyBus departs every 10 min from all terminals to Southern Cross Station in about 30 min (AU$24 one way). Runs 24/7. Taxi rank outside each terminal, AU$55 to AU$75 to the CBD.
Explore Melbourne
~2h 20m of free time
At MEL, stay airside—explore food and lounges in T2, and avoid terminal hopping since re-screening eats time.
We recommend you stay airside: Melbourne Airport is farther from the city and traffic adds up.
A short city visit is possible via bus or taxi if conditions are ideal.
Pick a vibrant inner neighborhood and settle in. Walking, food, and cultural areas fill the time easily. Transit is good, but avoid crossing the city multiple times in one day.
Return to MEL
30 min back to airport
Leave enough buffer - trains run to a schedule and can be delayed
Buy your return ticket in advance if possible
Set an alarm 75 min before your departure gate closes
Back through security
~45 min buffer before gate
Re-entry security at MEL typically takes 10-20 min
Check your gate - it may have changed while you were out
Liquids bought in the city cannot pass security - finish or bin them
Where to Eat
