Your layover plan

Arrive & Immigration
~45 min · MAD
  • Follow signs to passport control immediately on landing
  • Have onward boarding pass and hotel/address ready for questions
  • Automated eGates handle EU and EEA passports. Pre-registered US, UK, Canadian, and Australian travellers can use eGates after their first EES biometric enrolment. T4S handles most non-Schengen long-haul and can queue 30 to 45 min at the morning and evening peaks.
Transit into the city
30 min

Metro Line 8 runs from T4 and T1-T2-T3 to Nuevos Ministerios in about 15 min for 4.50 to 5 euros with the mandatory 3 euro airport supplement (trains every 5 to 7 min). Cercanías C-1 train leaves from T4 only and reaches Chamartín or Atocha in 25 to 30 min for 2.60 euros. Airport Express bus 203 (yellow) runs 24/7 to Atocha in roughly 40 min for 5 euros.

We recommend you stay airside: Madrid airport distances and queues make short exits risky.
Return to MAD
30 min back to airport
  • Leave enough buffer - trains run to a schedule and can be delayed
  • Buy your return ticket in advance if possible
  • Set an alarm 65 min before your departure gate closes
Back through security
~35 min buffer before gate
  • Re-entry security at MAD typically takes 10-20 min
  • Check your gate - it may have changed while you were out
  • Liquids bought in the city cannot pass security - finish or bin them
