Your layover plan

Arrive & Immigration
~60 min · CAI
  • Follow signs to passport control immediately on landing
  • Have onward boarding pass and hotel/address ready for questions
  • Immigration lines can be long, 30–60 min on arrival depending on terminal and time of day. Visa on arrival is sold at bank desks landside before immigration, cash USD only ($25). Terminal 3 is generally faster than Terminal 2.
Transit into the city
55 min

No direct rail link to CAI yet. Most travellers use Uber or Careem, 45–60 min to downtown for EGP 300–500. Airport Shuttle Bus 356 runs from Terminals 1 and 3 to Abdel Moneim Riad downtown for EGP 10 but takes 75 min. Metro Line 3 extension to CAI is planned but not operational.

Explore Cairo
~40m of free time
A 3-6 hour layover to Cairo is challenging. Cairo International Airport is 22km from central Cairo and traffic can be severe. If you have e-Gate access and fast immigration, a Metro ride ($0.20) to downtown takes 30-40 minutes. The Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square is the only realistic target for a short layover - allow 90 minutes inside. Head back 90 minutes before your flight. Total: only about 90 minutes of actual city time.
Return to CAI
55 min back to airport
  • Leave enough buffer - trains run to a schedule and can be delayed
  • Buy your return ticket in advance if possible
  • Set an alarm 115 min before your departure gate closes
Back through security
~60 min buffer before gate
  • Re-entry security at CAI typically takes 10-20 min
  • Check your gate - it may have changed while you were out
  • Liquids bought in the city cannot pass security - finish or bin them
