Snapshot

Cairo Airport has three terminals. T3 is the modern hub used by EgyptAir for most international routes and is the most comfortable for a long wait. T1 handles additional international carriers; T2 is older and primarily domestic. There is no direct rail connection to the city, so you leave by Uber, Careem, or taxi, and Cairo traffic is serious. With 10 hours or more and realistic expectations, the Pyramids of Giza are reachable. With less, a focused downtown stop is possible but tight.

Priority Pass acceptance at CAI changes frequently. Verify your card access before arrival rather than assuming it works.

Traveler notes

  • T3 is newer, cleaner, and more comfortable for a long wait. If your airline is in T3, count yourself lucky.
  • Visa on arrival is sold at bank desks before immigration in both T1 and T3. USD 25 cash only. ATMs in arrivals also dispense USD. Confirm eligibility for your passport before travel.
  • Cairo traffic is serious. Mornings from 7 to 10 AM and evenings from 4 to 8 PM can push transit times well past the estimates below. Plan accordingly.

Sleep / Rest

  • No sleep pods or nap zones in common areas.
  • Novotel Cairo Airport (T1 side, connected): available for day use. The most practical option for a long layover that needs a proper rest.
  • CIP Lounge T3 has recliner chairs for use during your paid session.

Food

  • Airside T3: Cilantro Egyptian Cafe for coffees, pastries, and sandwiches. Clean, air-conditioned, and consistent. Better for a snack than a full meal.
  • T3 also has international fast food chains post-security.
  • T1 airside: More limited. Paid CIP Lounge access gives the best food option here.

Showers

  • EgyptAir Family Lounge (eligible passengers) and paid CIP/VIP Lounges include showers.
  • Novotel is the practical option for anyone without lounge access who needs a proper wash.

Luggage Storage

  • Left luggage counters in T1 and T3 arrivals. Rates are modest; confirm in Egyptian Pounds (EGP) at the counter as pricing shifts with the currency.

Transit to City

  • Uber/Careem: Most reliable. About 45-60 min to downtown Cairo or Zamalek. Approximately EGP 300-500 (verify current rate; Egypt pound has fluctuated significantly). Book inside the airport and meet your driver at the designated app pickup zone.
  • Official airport taxis: Fixed rate zones available at the official rank outside arrivals. Agree on the price and destination before getting in.
  • Bus 356: Runs from T1 and T3 to Abdel Moneim Riad downtown, about 60-90 min, very cheap but infrequent. Not recommended when time matters.
  • Return buffer: Leave 3h before departure. Add more during peak traffic hours. Security and immigration at CAI can be slow.

Essentials

  • Visa: Egypt offers visa on arrival ($25 USD cash) for citizens of most Western, Gulf, and many Asian nationalities. An e-visa purchased before travel is cleaner and recommended. Check eligibility for your specific passport before you go.
  • Wi-Fi: Free in T3, reasonable speed. T1 is slower and less reliable.
  • Currency: Egyptian Pound (EGP). ATMs in arrivals dispense both EGP and USD. Exchange rates at airport counters are poor; use the ATM instead.
  • SIM/eSIM: Egyptian SIM cards from Vodafone, Orange, or Etisalat are available in arrivals. Bring your passport. An eSIM before arrival may be simpler.
  • Prayer rooms: Available in T1 and T3.

Fast City Hit (6-9h): Tight

  • Under 10h, the Pyramids are too far after accounting for visa/immigration time and Cairo traffic. Khan el-Khalili bazaar in Islamic Cairo (about 40-50 min from the airport by Uber) is the more realistic option. It can work with 8h and no major delays at immigration. Leave 3h before departure.

Longer City Hit (10h+)

  • Pyramids of Giza: about 30 km from the airport, 45-60 min by Uber. Allow 2-3h at the site. Pre-book tickets at the official Egypt Tourism website to skip the on-site queue. Total excursion time: 5-7h. Leave 3h before departure.
  • Egyptian Museum of Cairo (downtown, about 40 min from airport) combined with a Nile Corniche walk is more time-efficient than Giza and pairs well with lunch in Zamalek.
