At HNL, stay airside—explore open-air terminals, local food, and shops without leaving security.
A 3-6 hour layover at HNL is genuinely worth attempting. Take Bus 19 or 20 from the airport to Waikiki (30 min, $3) or grab a rideshare for $35. You will have 1-2 hours at the beach. Waikiki Beach is 15 minutes walk from the bus stop. Swim, get shave ice from Island Snow, and head back. Leave the beach 90 minutes before your flight.
Six to ten hours opens up much more. After Waikiki, walk 20 minutes to Diamond Head State Monument and hike to the summit crater rim (45 min round trip, $5 entry). The views back over Waikiki and the south shore are excellent. Return to the beach for the afternoon. Kapahulu Avenue (10 min walk from Waikiki) has excellent local food: Leonard's Bakery for malasadas (Portuguese donuts), Rainbow Drive-In for plate lunches. Allow 90 min to return to the airport including check-in.
With 10+ hours, go beyond Waikiki. Rent a car for the day or use TheBus. Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve (30 min east) is a stunning marine reserve for snorkeling - book online in advance, entry is $25. The Pali Lookout in the Ko'olau Mountains is free and has dramatic views over the windward coast. Kailua town on the windward side has calm turquoise water at Kailua Beach and excellent shave ice. North Shore (1 hour from airport) has world-famous surf beaches. Eat at Helena's Hawaiian Food in Kalihi for old-school Hawaiian plates and poi.
