40 min

TheBus Route 20 runs from Terminal 2 to Waikiki in about 60 min ($2.75 one-way, every 30 min). Skyline rail links HNL to Kalihi Transit Center in 10 min ($3) but does not reach Waikiki directly. Rideshare to Waikiki is typically $30 to $50.

Explore Honolulu
~1h 50m of free time
A 3-6 hour layover at HNL is genuinely worth attempting. Take Bus 19 or 20 from the airport to Waikiki (30 min, $3) or grab a rideshare for $35. You will have 1-2 hours at the beach. Waikiki Beach is 15 minutes walk from the bus stop. Swim, get shave ice from Island Snow, and head back. Leave the beach 90 minutes before your flight.
Return to HNL
40 min back to airport
  • Leave enough buffer - trains run to a schedule and can be delayed
  • Buy your return ticket in advance if possible
  • Set an alarm 90 min before your departure gate closes
Back through security
~50 min buffer before gate
  • Re-entry security at HNL typically takes 10-20 min
  • Check your gate - it may have changed while you were out
  • Liquids bought in the city cannot pass security - finish or bin them
