At ANC, stay airside—quiet airport with lounges and views, and winter conditions can complicate exits.
We recommend staying airside for a 3-6 hour layover at ANC. The airport is small and clean with decent dining options. If you have e-gate clearance and immigration moves fast, a taxi to downtown takes 20 minutes - but the reward is limited for the time spent.
A 6-10 hour layover gives you enough time to reach downtown Anchorage. The Tony Knowles Coastal Trail starts near downtown and offers views of Cook Inlet and the Alaska Range on clear days. Visit the Anchorage Museum (5th Ave and A St) for Alaska history and indigenous culture. The Saturday Market (summer only) on 3rd and E has local food stalls. Allow 30 minutes back to the airport.
With 10+ hours, head downtown and make a day of it. The Anchorage Museum is worth 2 hours. Walk the coastal trail toward Earthquake Park for inlet views. Rent a bike from any downtown shop for the trail. In summer, Flattop Mountain trailhead is 30 minutes from town and offers panoramic views of the city and inlet. For food: Snow City Cafe for breakfast, Humpy's Great Alaskan Alehouse for halibut fish and chips and local beers. The Alaska Native Heritage Center near the airport is excellent and practical to visit on your return leg.
