Your layover plan

Arrive & Immigration
~45 min · ADD
  • Follow signs to passport control immediately on landing
  • Have onward boarding pass and hotel/address ready for questions
  • Ethiopia runs all entry formalities at desk counters; there are no eGates. Only Kenyan and Djiboutian passport holders enter visa-free, so everyone else should have a printed eVisa approval before arrival. Queues are lengthy around major Ethiopian Airlines arrival banks.
Transit into the city
35 min

Taxi is the main connection to Addis Ababa, ETB 300 to 500 to central Bole or Piazza in 15 to 30 minutes. Agree the fare before departure. Bole Airport station on the city light rail is a few minutes walk from Terminal 2 but runs infrequently and is awkward with luggage.

Explore Addis Ababa
~1h 40m of free time
A 3-6 hour layover in Addis Ababa is very practical - Bole Airport is only 5km from the city center. A taxi costs $3-5 and takes 10-15 minutes. Head to the Tomoca coffee shop (established 1953, the city's most famous roaster) on Wavel Street for a traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony experience. The surrounding Piazza neighborhood has colonial-era Italian architecture worth walking. Allow 60 minutes to return to the airport.
Return to ADD
35 min back to airport
  • Leave enough buffer - trains run to a schedule and can be delayed
  • Buy your return ticket in advance if possible
  • Set an alarm 90 min before your departure gate closes
Back through security
~55 min buffer before gate
  • Re-entry security at ADD typically takes 10-20 min
  • Check your gate - it may have changed while you were out
  • Liquids bought in the city cannot pass security - finish or bin them
