Your layover plan

Arrive & Immigration
~45 min · AMS
  • Follow signs to passport control immediately on landing
  • Have onward boarding pass and hotel/address ready for questions
  • Schengen arrivals clear no immigration at AMS. Non-Schengen arrivals (US, UK, Canada, India, most of Asia) use Passport Control, averaging 20 to 30 min off-peak and 40 to 60 min during the morning bank. E-gates are open to EU, US, UK, Canada, and Australia passport holders over 14.
Transit into the city
25 min

Follow signs for Trains under Schiphol Plaza. NS intercity and sprinter trains run to Amsterdam Centraal every 10 min, 15 to 17 min end to end, €5.40 one way. Contactless card works at the gate. Platforms 1 and 2 are most direct.

~2h 20m of free time
We recommend you stay airside: Schiphol is efficient but security re-entry can be slow.
Return to AMS
25 min back to airport
  • Leave enough buffer - trains run to a schedule and can be delayed
  • Buy your return ticket in advance if possible
  • Set an alarm 60 min before your departure gate closes
Back through security
~35 min buffer before gate
  • Re-entry security at AMS typically takes 10-20 min
  • Check your gate - it may have changed while you were out
  • Liquids bought in the city cannot pass security - finish or bin them
