Amsterdam Airport Schiphol sits about 9 km southwest of the city center and ranks among Europe’s busiest hubs, serving as the home base for KLM. Compact, single-terminal and famously easy to navigate, it is also one of the most rewarding airports to explore, with free museums, a library and even an outdoor park all after security.
The train is by far the quickest route. NS Intercity services run directly from the station beneath the terminal to Amsterdam Centraal in about 17 minutes, departing up to eight times an hour and costing only a few euros. From Centraal, tram line 2 rolls past the Rijksmuseum, the Canal Ring and Vondelpark. Buses and taxis are available too, but the train is hard to beat.
Schiphol packs in remarkable free attractions. The Rijksmuseum Schiphol shows real Dutch Masters artworks in a quiet airside gallery. The 24/7 Airport Library, the world’s first, holds over 1,200 books in twelve languages, while the outdoor Airport Park offers fresh air after security. The Panorama Terrace gives runway views and a boardable KLM Fokker 100, and the NEMO Science Museum branch offers eight hands-on experiments.
Thanks to the fast train, Schiphol is one of the easiest airports for a quick city trip. Allow at least four to five hours once passport control, which applies when leaving the Schengen area, and the ride into town are factored in. For shorter layovers, the free museums, library and park mean you never have to leave the terminal to enjoy Amsterdam.
