HKG is a genuinely good airport to be stuck in — stay airside rather than rushing the city.
- The Sky Bridge between Terminal 1 and the SkyPier has a quiet seating area with harbour views
- HKIA has a golf simulator, IMAX cinema, and over 70 restaurants airside — most post-security
- Head to your gate early: HKG is one of the world's largest terminals and gate walks can take 15-20 min
3-6 hours is tight but workable if immigration is smooth — Airport Express makes the city genuinely fast.
- Airport Express to Hong Kong Station (Central): 24 min, HKD 115 return, runs every 10 min from 5:54am to 12:48am
- From Hong Kong Station: Central, Sheung Wan, and the waterfront Promenade are 5-10 min walk
- Tsim Sha Tsui (Kowloon side) adds 10 min by MTR — the Victoria Harbour view from the waterfront is worth the extra stop
- Be back at the airport 90 min before departure — check-in can be done at Hong Kong Station on the way out
A proper Hong Kong slice is realistic. Central, the Peak, and Tsim Sha Tsui form a natural triangle to work through.
- Airport Express to Central: 24 min, HKD 115 return — buy an Octopus card at the airport for tap-in transit throughout
- The Peak Tram from Central to Victoria Peak takes 8 min and costs HKD 88 return — queue can add 20-40 min on weekends
- Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront promenade has the best free Harbour views — 10 min by MTR from Central
- Leave for airport 90 min before departure — or check bags at Hong Kong Station on your way in and collect them before your gate
10+ hours opens up Hong Kong properly. The city is dense and the MTR is excellent — you can cover a lot of ground.
- Base yourself in Central or Tsim Sha Tsui — both are 24 min from the airport and surrounded by food, shopping, and harbour views
- Hong Kong island tram (Ding Ding): HKD 3 per ride along the northern shore — one of the best cheap transit experiences in Asia
- Mong Kok street markets (Ladies Market, Temple Street Night Market) are 15 min by MTR from Central
- Dim sum lunch at any local teahouse costs HKD 80-150 per person — far better and cheaper than tourist-facing spots
