Your layover plan

Arrive & Immigration
~40 min · GIG
  • Follow signs to passport control immediately on landing
  • Have onward boarding pass and hotel/address ready for questions
  • International arrivals can face 30 to 45 min queues at peak times. No automated eGates for foreign passports. US, Canadian, and Australian travelers must present an approved eVisa (printed or on phone).
Transit into the city
45 min

Premium bus (Frescão or Internorte) from Terminal 2 reaches Centro in 30 to 45 min for about R$25. BRT Line 42 plus Metro Line 2 via Vicente de Carvalho costs around R$5.80 but takes 60+ min. Uber is usually the fastest practical option at 25 to 35 min.

Explore Rio de Janeiro
~1h 35m of free time
We recommend you stay airside: Rio traffic and airport distance make short exits unrealistic.
Return to GIG
45 min back to airport
  • Leave enough buffer - trains run to a schedule and can be delayed
  • Buy your return ticket in advance if possible
  • Set an alarm 90 min before your departure gate closes
Back through security
~45 min buffer before gate
  • Re-entry security at GIG typically takes 10-20 min
  • Check your gate - it may have changed while you were out
  • Liquids bought in the city cannot pass security - finish or bin them

What you need to know

Currency
Brazilian Real (R$). Cards widely accepted in Rio. Use ATMs in arrivals for better rates than the airport exchange bureaus.
Language
Portuguese. English coverage is thinner than in Europe, though tourist areas and most hotels are fine.
Visa
US, Canadian, and Australian citizens need an eVisa as of January 2026 (online application, usually approved within 72 hours, 90 days per visit). UK and most EU passports are visa-free for 90 days. Staying airside under 24 hours is visa-free. Verify before travel, visa rules change.
Transit
Premium bus from GIG Terminal 2 to Centro in 30 to 45 min (around R$25, roughly hourly). Uber or taxi is faster, 25 to 35 min and R$80 to R$120. BRT Line 42 plus Metro Line 2 costs about R$5.80 but takes 60+ min. SDU is 10 min by taxi from Centro.
Weather
Tropical. Hot humid summers (Dec to Feb, 30C+), mild winters (Jun to Aug, 20 to 25C). April, May, September, and October are the most comfortable months for a layover.
Tipping
A 10 percent taxa de serviço is added to most restaurant bills and is the expected tip. Extra is optional. Not expected for taxis, round up instead. Use Uber or 99 rather than street taxis.
Emergency
190 (police, general emergencies). 192 for ambulance (SAMU). 193 for fire.
Time Zone
BRT (UTC-3). No daylight saving time since 2019.
