Your layover plan

Arrive & Immigration
~39 min · airport
  • Follow signs to passport control immediately on landing
  • Have onward boarding pass and hotel/address ready for questions
Transit into the city
32 min
  • Buy your ticket before boarding
  • Keep your return journey in mind - same route back
Explore Reykjavik
~2h 17m of free time
We recommend you stay airside: Keflavík Airport is far from Reykjavik, making short exits unrealistic.
Return to airport
32 min back to airport
  • Leave enough buffer - trains run to a schedule and can be delayed
  • Buy your return ticket in advance if possible
  • Set an alarm 62 min before your departure gate closes
Back through security
~30 min buffer before gate
  • Re-entry security at airport typically takes 10-20 min
  • Check your gate - it may have changed while you were out
  • Liquids bought in the city cannot pass security - finish or bin them

What you need to know

Currency
Icelandic króna (ISK / kr). Cards accepted everywhere, Iceland is effectively cashless. ATMs at Keflavík arrivals if you need cash.
Language
Icelandic. English is spoken fluently by nearly everyone, especially in Reykjavík and at the airport.
Visa
Schengen zone. Most Western passports (US, UK, Canada, Australia) get 90 days visa-free; ETIAS authorisation is required for visa-exempt non-EU travellers from 2026. Verify before travel — visa rules change.
Transit
Flybus: KEF to BSÍ bus terminal in central Reykjavík in about 45 min, departures tied to every arriving flight, roughly 3,999 ISK (~€27) one-way. Airport Direct offers a similar service; taxis from KEF run 18,000–22,000 ISK.
Weather
Subarctic oceanic. Cool summers around 10–13°C, mild but windy winters hovering near freezing. June through August give the longest daylight and best layover conditions.
Tipping
Not expected. Service is included in menu prices; rounding up at restaurants is appreciated but never required.
Emergency
112 (universal for police, fire, and ambulance).
Time Zone
GMT (UTC+0). Iceland does not observe daylight saving time and stays on GMT year-round.
