Your layover plan

Arrive & Immigration
~45 min · MCT
  • Follow signs to passport control immediately on landing
  • Have onward boarding pass and hotel/address ready for questions
  • The airport uses a single integrated terminal with e-gates for Omani citizens and residents only; visitors queue at manned counters. Typical wait is under 15 min outside peak arrivals but can stretch longer during Gulf carrier banks.
Transit into the city
25 min

The Mwasalat A1 bus departs from the basement stop (200m from arrivals) to Ruwi Bus Station in 45 min for OMR 1, every 30 min. Official orange-and-white taxis reach central Muscat in 25 to 40 min for around OMR 9.25.

Explore Muscat
~2h 5m of free time
Go directly to Mutrah Souq, 30 to 40 minutes from the airport by taxi (OMR 8 to 10). The covered market sells silver, frankincense, textiles, and spices in a compact, walkable space. Adjacent to the souq is Mutrah Corniche, a 3 km seafront promenade with views of the harbor and old forts. Allow 60 to 90 minutes in the area and depart for the airport 45 minutes before your self-imposed departure buffer.
Return to MCT
25 min back to airport
  • Leave enough buffer - trains run to a schedule and can be delayed
  • Buy your return ticket in advance if possible
  • Set an alarm 75 min before your departure gate closes
Back through security
~50 min buffer before gate
  • Re-entry security at MCT typically takes 10-20 min
  • Check your gate - it may have changed while you were out
  • Liquids bought in the city cannot pass security - finish or bin them
