A 3-6 hour layover in Mumbai is difficult due to distance and traffic. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Airport is 25-30km from South Mumbai and the drive can take 45-90 minutes. For a short layover, stay in the airport or Juhu Beach area (10 min from the domestic terminal) - clean beach, bhelpuri stalls, Juhu chowpatty food vendors. A practical short-layover alternative.
Six to ten hours makes South Mumbai reachable if traffic cooperates. Grab an AC cab app ($15-20) to Colaba. Walk to the Gateway of India for photos, then into the Colaba Causeway for bookshops and antique stalls. Cafe Mondegar near the Taj is one of Mumbai's oldest cafes. Victoria Terminus (CST) is 20 minutes north by taxi - the Victorian Gothic UNESCO station is worth seeing even from the outside with rush hour commuters streaming through. For food: vada pav (potato fritter in a bun, $0.30) at any street stall is the defining Mumbai snack. Midway restaurant on Marine Drive for Parsi food. Return by app cab - allow 90 minutes.
With 10+ hours, Mumbai rewards a longer day. The Dharavi district (misrepresented as slum tourism) is actually one of Asia's largest industrial zones with over 15,000 single-room factories producing pottery, leather, recycled plastics, and textiles - recognized tours provide respectful access and context. The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya museum (formerly Prince of Wales Museum) has excellent collections of Indian art, natural history, and decorative arts. Juhu Beach at sunset is busy and atmospheric with street food. The bandra-worli sea link and Bandra Bandstand Promenade area offer a contrast between old and new Mumbai.
