Istanbul

A city straddling continents with historic streets, markets, and waterfront views.

Before you plan a trip into the city
Destination airport
IST is a sight in itself. You may not need to leave at all.
The best of Istanbul starts before you exit. Standout experiences sit right inside the terminals, many of them free.

Your layover plan

Arrive & Immigration
~45 min · IST
  • Follow signs to passport control immediately on landing
  • Have onward boarding pass and hotel/address ready for questions
  • Immigration can be busy; allow extra time.
Transit into the city
50 min

Metro helps, but overall travel times + traffic can be heavy; plan conservatively.

Explore Istanbul
~1h 35m of free time
We recommend you stay airside: Istanbul Airport is very far from the city, making short exits unrealistic.
Return to IST
50 min back to airport
  • Leave enough buffer - trains run to a schedule and can be delayed
  • Buy your return ticket in advance if possible
  • Set an alarm 80 min before your departure gate closes
Back through security
~30 min buffer before gate
  • Re-entry security at IST typically takes 10-20 min
  • Check your gate - it may have changed while you were out
  • Liquids bought in the city cannot pass security - finish or bin them
