Helsinki

Nordic calm with modern design and seaside charm.

Before you plan a trip into the city
Destination airport
HEL is a sight in itself. You may not need to leave at all.
The best of Helsinki starts before you exit. Standout experiences sit right inside the terminals, many of them free.

Your layover plan

Arrive & Immigration
~10 min · HEL
  • Follow signs to passport control immediately on landing
  • Have onward boarding pass and hotel/address ready for questions
  • Automated eGates for EU, UK, and most visa-exempt passport holders in the Schengen pier. Non-Schengen arrivals use manned booths but queues are short compared to larger European hubs.
Transit into the city
30 min

HSL airport train (I or P line) runs from the Terminal 2 basement to Helsinki Central in 28 to 33 min, every 10 min, €4.40. Tap a contactless card at the platform gate or buy a zone ABC ticket in the HSL app.

We recommend you stay airside: Helsinki Airport is efficient but distance limits short visits.
Return to HEL
30 min back to airport
  • Leave enough buffer - trains run to a schedule and can be delayed
  • Buy your return ticket in advance if possible
  • Set an alarm 65 min before your departure gate closes
Back through security
~35 min buffer before gate
  • Re-entry security at HEL typically takes 10-20 min
  • Check your gate - it may have changed while you were out
  • Liquids bought in the city cannot pass security - finish or bin them
