Your layover plan

Arrive & Immigration
~15 min · AUH
  • Follow signs to passport control immediately on landing
  • Have onward boarding pass and hotel/address ready for questions
  • Smart Gate (biometric eGates) in Terminal A arrivals is open to UAE residents, GCC nationals, and passport holders from the US, UK, EU, Canada, Australia, NZ, Japan, and several others. Most eligible travelers clear in under 5 min off-peak. Manual counter queues can run 15-25 min on simultaneous peak arrivals from Europe and Asia. The customs declaration is digital; fill it out onboard or via the UAEICP app before landing.
Transit into the city
30 min

Official taxi rank is curbside outside Terminal A arrivals. All taxis are metered and no negotiation is needed. A1 Express Bus stop is outside arrivals pillar 1; a Hafilat card costs AED 5 (refundable deposit) plus AED 4 fare, paid at the bus counter. Careem and Uber pickup zones are in short-term parking (pillar 8). The AED 20 airport exit toll is already included in metered taxi fares.

~2h 30m of free time
We recommend you stay airside: Abu Dhabi Airport is large and transfers take time.
Return to AUH
30 min back to airport
  • Leave enough buffer - trains run to a schedule and can be delayed
  • Buy your return ticket in advance if possible
  • Set an alarm 75 min before your departure gate closes
Back through security
~45 min buffer before gate
  • Re-entry security at AUH typically takes 10-20 min
  • Check your gate - it may have changed while you were out
  • Liquids bought in the city cannot pass security - finish or bin them

What you need to know

Currency
UAE Dirham (AED). $1 ≈ AED 3.67 (pegged to USD, stable since 1997). Cards accepted nearly everywhere including taxis, malls, and the Corniche cafes. Carry AED 20-50 in small notes for tips and independent cabs. ATMs in AUH Terminal A arrivals; Emirates NBD and First Abu Dhabi Bank (FAB) have the lowest fees for foreign cards.
Language
Arabic is the official language, but English is the working language across AUH, hotels, restaurants, and taxis. All signage is bilingual (Arabic and English). You will not need any Arabic to get through a layover. Hindi, Urdu, Tagalog, and Malayalam are also widely understood given the labor demographics.
Visa
Free 30-day visa on arrival at AUH for US, UK, Australian, Canadian, Japanese, Singaporean, and most Asia-Pacific passport holders. EU citizens, Norway, Switzerland, Russia, South Korea, and Brazil: free 90-day visa on arrival. Passport must be valid 6+ months. Indian nationals with a valid US/UK/EU visa or residency: free 14-day visa on arrival. GCC citizens: free movement. Verify before travel. Visa rules change.
Transit
AUH (Zayed International) sits 30 km southeast of central Abu Dhabi. Metered airport taxi from the official rank outside Terminal A arrivals: 30-40 min, AED 75-90 to the Corniche / Downtown. A1 Express Bus runs to Abu Dhabi main bus station every 40 min for AED 4 (Hafilat card) or AED 12 (cash); 50-60 min ride. Careem and Uber both work and are often cheaper than metered taxis off-peak. No metro or rail serves AUH yet.
Weather
Hot desert climate. Summer (Jun-Sep): 38-45°C (100-113°F) with coastal humidity that makes outdoor sightseeing punishing after 10:00. Winter (Dec-Feb): 18-26°C (64-79°F), sunny, ideal. November through March is the sweet spot for the Grand Mosque, Corniche, and Louvre Abu Dhabi. Rain is rare (under 50 mm per year). Pack a light layer for strongly air-conditioned interiors.
Tipping
A 10% service charge is usually included at sit-down restaurants; an extra 5-10% in cash for good service is appreciated but optional. Taxi drivers: round up to the nearest AED 5-10. Hotel porters: AED 5-10 per bag. Airport porters: AED 10. No tipping expected at fast casual counters, coffee shops, or the A1 Express Bus.
Emergency
Police: 999. Ambulance: 998. Fire: 997. Tourist police operate from AUH arrivals. Abu Dhabi ranks among the safest major cities globally. Public behavior laws are strict across the UAE: no drunkenness outside licensed venues, no public displays of affection, and photograph people (especially women) only with explicit consent. Alcohol is sold at licensed hotel bars and restaurants only.
Time Zone
Gulf Standard Time (GST), UTC+4. No daylight saving. 3 hours ahead of London in UK winter, 4 hours ahead in UK summer. 8 hours ahead of New York in US winter, 7 hours in US summer. Most shops open 10:00-22:00 daily; malls run until 00:00 Thu-Sat. Friday remains the quieter morning across the UAE.
