Singapore Layover Guide: When Changi Airport Is the Destination

Singapore Changi is routinely voted the world's best airport, and for good reason. The question for any layover is not whether to stay airside — it is how to calibrate your time between Jewel Changi and the city itself.

Singapore Layover Guide: When Changi Airport Is the Destination

Is it worth leaving the airport?

Changi is one of the world’s best airports. Sometimes the airport itself is your layover. You can see the Merlion, eat laksa from a hawker center, and watch the Marina Bay skyline in 6 hours. In 3 hours, stay inside Changi. Jewel’s indoor waterfall and rooftop gardens rival many cities’ main attractions.

What you need to know

Transit: MRT East West Line from Changi to City Hall takes 30 minutes for SGD 2.10. Grab taxi costs SGD 20-30.

Visa: Visa-free for US, EU, UK, Canadian, and Australian passport holders (90 days). Singapore processes immigration extremely fast.

Currency: Singapore Dollar (SGD). MRT accepts NETS cards, credit cards, and cash at hawker centers.

Heat: Year-round 30-34C. Humidity is intense. Plan for air conditioning and hydration.

What to do in 3 hours

Stay at Changi. The airport is not a backup plan. It’s the destination. Jewel Changi has the world’s largest indoor waterfall (HSBC Rain Vortex), rooftop gardens, restaurants, and a movie theater. Terminal 4 has heritage street food courts with char kway teow and chicken rice. You will see people spending their entire layover here by choice.

What to do in 6 hours

Take the MRT to City Hall (30 min). Walk to Marina Bay Sands for the skyline view. Cross to Merlion Park. Walk through the CBD to Clarke Quay for a drink by the river.

Eat at Maxwell Food Centre: chicken rice costs SGD 3-5, and a bowl of laksa costs SGD 4. These are not airport prices. These are some of the cheapest, best meals on earth.

Allow 75 minutes to return to the airport and clear the MRT to your terminal. You will have time.

Alternative: Skip the waterfront. Walk Chinatown, Little India, and Arab Street. All three neighborhoods are within 1 km of each other. Browse the temples, mosques, and spice shops. Eat at a street vendor instead of a sit-down restaurant.

Practical tips

Singapore is extremely safe and clean. The MRT is excellent and runs frequently.

Hawker food is the best cheap food in the world. Do not eat at airport restaurants when you can eat at a hawker centre for SGD 4.

Have exact change for hawker stalls or bring a credit card. Most vendors now accept NETS and Visa.

The airport is modern and cool. The city center is hot and humid. Plan accordingly.

Key Tips
  • Changi Airport is itself a world-class destination. MRT takes 30 min to city for SGD 2.10. Immigration is fast and efficient.
