Can You Leave LIM on a Layover?

Do not take rides from drivers who approach you outside. Rideshare apps (Uber, Cabify, Beat) work similarly off-peak but can surge during busy periods.

Skip Callao entirely. There is nothing near the airport worth stopping for.

If You Have 3 Hours

Stay airside. The transit time alone would consume most of it.

The international departures area has enough to keep you comfortable. Tanta and Sangucheria La Lucha both serve solid Peruvian sandwiches past security. The Sumaq and Hanaq lounges near Gate 17 are worth the access fee if you need a proper seat, shower, or a quiet place to work. Grab food before you reach your gate area rather than relying on the stands directly outside the gates, which are more limited.

If You Have 6 Hours

Head to Miraflores. It is Lima most accessible neighborhood for a layover visit: the Malecon clifftop walk runs along the Pacific, the streets are calm and walkable, and restaurants are close together.

Walk from the bus stop at Parque Kennedy south along the cliffs. The views over the Pacific are why you came. When you are ready for lunch, go to Punto Azul or La Red on Av. San Martin. Both are Miraflores standards for ceviche. Expect to pay $15 to $18 USD per person with a drink. Arrive at opening (noon) to get seated without a wait.

Ceviche in Lima is the right choice for a short layover. It is fast, it is what this city does better than anywhere, and you will not eat it better on whatever flight you are connecting to.

Leave Miraflores no later than 4 hours before your departure. That allows an hour for the journey, 90 minutes for check-in and security, and 30 minutes of cushion. Do not push it closer.

If You Have 8 to 12 Hours

Add Barranco. Take a taxi from Miraflores rather than walking (about $6 USD, 15 to 20 minutes, and the walking route is not pleasant). Barranco is a quieter neighborhood. Walk across the Puente de los Suspiros, wander the painted side streets, and stop at Bisetti for coffee. The MATE photography museum and the Museo de Arte Contemporaneo (MAC) are both in this neighborhood. Either takes under an hour. MATE focuses on fashion photography and Peruvian portraiture; MAC covers Latin American contemporary art.

Eat before the museum. Ceviche at La Canta Rana in Barranco, or somewhere in Miraflores before you take the taxi south.

If your flight is in the late afternoon, factor in peak traffic carefully. Rush hour on the expressway into Callao can stretch a 50-minute journey to 90 minutes. Build in the extra time rather than hoping conditions stay light.
