Zurich Airport (ZRH) is Switzerland’s largest airport, sitting in Kloten just northeast of the city. It is the hub of Swiss International Air Lines and a polished, efficient gateway to the Alps. With rooftop decks, a Sunday-open shopping centre, and the striking Circle complex next door, it doubles as a genuine day-out destination for locals and travellers alike.

The train is the easy choice. S-Bahn services and regional trains run from the station beneath the terminal to Zurich Hauptbahnhof in about 10 minutes, departing every 5 to 10 minutes from around 5am to midnight. A single second-class adult ticket costs roughly CHF 6.80. From the central station you can walk to the old town or connect onward across Switzerland, since Zurich HB is one of Europe’s busiest rail hubs. Trams and taxis are also available at the terminal.
ZRH rewards a wander. Observation Deck B sits on the roof of Terminal 2 with binoculars, a restaurant, and a mini airport play area for children (a small fee applies). Observation Deck E is free airside for passengers with a boarding pass. The landside Airport Shopping Centre opens daily, and The Circle, linked by an elevated Skywalk, adds hotels, restaurants, and the Sablier rooftop bar.
Zurich is compact and superbly organised, so connections feel calm. Because the train reaches the city in only 10 minutes, even a layover of about four hours can be enough for a quick look at the old town. Switzerland is in the Schengen Area, so factor in passport control if you are arriving from or departing to a non-Schengen country. For shorter stops, the observation decks and shopping keep you busy without leaving the airport.
