Warsaw Modlin Airport (WMI) is the Polish capital’s low-cost gateway, about 40 kilometres north-west of central Warsaw. It’s the main base for Ryanair and other budget carriers, so if you booked a cheap fare into Warsaw, there’s a good chance you land here rather than at the larger Warsaw Chopin Airport (WAW) closer to the city. Modlin is compact and easy to navigate, with a single passenger terminal handling all arrivals and departures.

Getting from Modlin to central Warsaw

The distance is the single most important thing to plan around. Modlin sits farther out than most travellers expect, so budget roughly an hour each way into the city.

• ModlinBus and FlixBus coach: the simplest option. Direct coaches leave from outside the terminal and reach central Warsaw (near Warszawa Centralna and the Palace of Culture) in about 50 minutes. Buy tickets online in advance for the best price, and note that departures are timed to flights.
• Train and shuttle: a shuttle bus connects the airport to Modlin railway station, where trains run to Warszawa Centralna. It’s cheaper but involves a transfer and takes a little longer.
• Taxi or rideshare: door to door in roughly 40 to 50 minutes depending on traffic, though the 40 km distance makes it the priciest choice. Use an app or agree a fare rather than hailing at the rank.

Inside the terminal

Modlin’s single terminal is small and functional. You’ll find a handful of cafés and snack bars, duty-free and convenience shops, ATMs, and free airport Wi-Fi, but the selection is limited compared with a major hub. Don’t expect a large food court or an extensive lounge network. Airside seating is modest, so on busy budget-carrier mornings it can feel crowded. If you want to eat or work in comfort, do it before security.

Layovers and connections at WMI

Because Modlin is 40 km from the city, leaving the airport only makes sense on a longer layover. With under about 5 to 6 hours between flights you’re better off staying in the terminal, since the round-trip coach ride plus check-in and security eats most of a short stop. With 6 hours or more you have genuine time to see Warsaw’s Old Town before heading back, so long as you leave a comfortable buffer for the coach and the budget-airline boarding process, which closes early. Most Modlin connections are self-transfer between separate tickets, so you’ll usually re-check in and clear security again rather than connecting airside.

Overnight and early departures

Budget flights from Modlin often leave very early, and 24-hour facilities are limited. If you have a pre-dawn departure, consider a hotel in the Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki or Modlin area a short taxi from the terminal rather than travelling in from Warsaw at night. Travellers overnighting in the terminal should expect basic seating and limited food after hours.
