The insider's guide, from travelers who've actually been through.
Tocumen International Airport is Panama City’s main gateway and the busiest airport in Central America, widely known as the “Hub of the Americas” thanks to Copa Airlines, which funnels traffic between North, Central, and South America through here. It has two terminals: the older Terminal 1 and the large, modern Terminal 2. A free shuttle bus links them daily, roughly 5 AM to 11 PM, taking about 8 to 10 minutes, so if your connection switches terminals, allow for that hop. The airport sits about 22 km east of downtown, around 30 minutes by car.
Terminal 2 is bright and spacious with a wide range of restaurants, cafes, and one of the region’s larger duty-free selections, which is handy given how many people transit here. Free wifi is available. Lounges serve premium passengers and cardholders, including Copa’s own. Because it is such a heavy connecting hub, the terminals can get busy, so give yourself room during peak banks of flights.
Most people passing through Tocumen are connecting rather than staying, and short layovers are best handled airside. Many nationalities can enter Panama visa-free, so on a longer stop the metro or a taxi makes a trip into the city or historic Casco Viejo possible, just budget for the 22 km distance each way and immigration lines.
Use the tools above to check whether your layover is long enough to leave, and how the transit, immigration, and security timings add up for PTY.
