What we'd tell a friend

Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (TPE) lies about 40 kilometers west of central Taipei and is the island’s main international gateway. Beyond its role as a busy hub, it has become famous for its imaginative themed waiting lounges, which turn ordinary gate areas into showcases of Taiwanese culture, nature and design.

Getting to Taipei

The Taoyuan Airport MRT Express runs to Taipei Main Station in about 35 minutes from Terminal 1 and 38 from Terminal 2, departing roughly every 15 minutes for NT160. The Commuter service stops at all stations and takes around 50 minutes. Taxis and airport buses provide alternatives, especially useful outside MRT operating hours.

Inside the terminal

The airport’s signature draw is its collection of themed waiting lounges, with rooms devoted to Taiwan’s alpine peaks, orchids, fruit, textiles, opera, music and local cuisine, plus an indigenous arts lounge using driftwood, rattan and bamboo. You will also find EVA Air’s Hello Kitty check-in zone and gift gate, the calligraphy Wall of Literature, a virtual reality area and a Sports Park gym near Gate D1 in Terminal 2.

Layovers and connections

Thanks to the quick MRT, a layover of around five to six hours can support a brief Taipei visit, allowing for immigration and the return journey. Shorter stops are easily filled exploring the terminals’ themed lounges and cultural displays.

Use the tools above to check whether your layover is long enough to leave, and how the transit, immigration, and security timings add up for TPE.
