Oakland International Airport (OAK) sits on the east side of San Francisco Bay and is a practical, less hectic alternative to SFO for reaching the wider Bay Area. It operates two terminals, Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, which are close together and straightforward to walk between. OAK is a focus city for several domestic carriers and handles a good mix of point-to-point flights, so it tends to feel more relaxed than its bigger neighbour across the water.

Getting to Oakland and San Francisco

The key link is the BART rail system. From the airport you take the short Oakland Airport Connector, an automated train that runs from the terminals to Coliseum station in about 8 minutes, with the station sitting right across from Terminal 1 baggage claim and a short walk from Terminal 2. At Coliseum you join the main BART network, and a San Francisco or Daly City bound train reaches downtown San Francisco in around 21 minutes. So you can get from OAK into central San Francisco by rail in well under an hour. AC Transit buses, taxis, and ride-hailing are also available if you are staying on the Oakland side.

Inside the terminal

OAK is refreshingly easy going. Across the two terminals you will find a solid range of cafes, restaurants, and grab-and-go spots, plus shops and free wifi. It leans toward efficient and unfussy rather than luxurious, so it is a comfortable place to wait without feeling cramped. Security lines are generally more manageable here than at larger hubs, which makes for a smoother start to a trip.

Layovers and connections

OAK is largely a point-to-point airport rather than a big connecting hub, so most travellers are beginning or ending their journeys. If your itinerary does route you through here with time to spare, the quick BART connection makes a short trip into Oakland or San Francisco genuinely doable. Just leave a generous buffer for the return, re-clearing security, and reaching your gate, and factor in that connecting bags may need collecting and re-checking depending on your booking.
