Getting from YUL to Montreal

The 747 Express bus is the right call for most travelers. It runs 24/7 from the airport to Berri-UQAM metro station for CA$11.25, and that ticket includes a 24-hour metro pass for the rest of your day. Buses run every 20 to 30 minutes. Budget 45 minutes door to door.

Inside the terminal

YUL is a mid-size international airport with domestic and international operations under one connected roof, which keeps connections straightforward. Priority lounges are available for eligible travelers before international departures. Food options are adequate but not remarkable. If you have the time to get into the city, eat there instead.

Layovers and connections at YUL

The numbers are honest about what is possible. Transit into downtown takes 30 minutes each way. Clearing immigration on re-entry runs up to 45 minutes at peak evening banks. Add 35 minutes of security buffer before your next flight and you are at roughly two hours of overhead before you have a single minute in the city.

On a layover under 6 hours, staying in the terminal is the right call. On a 6 to 10 hour layover, you can make it downtown for a few hours if you move efficiently. Ten hours or more gives you real time to explore. Primary Inspection Kiosks (PIK) help visa-exempt travelers and Canadian citizens move faster on re-entry, but do not count on it at busy PM arrival banks.

Practical notes

Montreal is a bilingual city and the airport reflects that. Signs and staff are in French and English. Pay in Canadian dollars. The airport sits in Dorval, about 20 kilometers west of downtown, so the transit time above is real.
