Snapshot

MIA is American Airlines’ primary international hub. The terminal runs in a horseshoe shape with Concourses D, E, F/G/H handling most international traffic. The free MIA Mover people-mover connects to Metrorail at the Miami Intermodal Center, putting Brickell and downtown 20-25 minutes away. South Beach requires a bridge and takes longer. With 8 hours, a Brickell stop is realistic. South Beach as a destination works better with 12h or more.

Lounges

Concourse Lounge Access Showers Good for Price (paid)
D (upper level) AA Admirals Club AA / oneworld biz or AA credit card Yes Buffet, bar, workspaces About $79 day pass
D (Flagship area) AA Flagship Lounge AA international business, Exec Platinum Yes Full dining, premium bar, top-tier showers N/A
E AA Admirals Club AA / oneworld biz or AA credit card Yes Buffet, bar About $79 day pass

American dominates MIA. Priority Pass access is minimal here. Third-party lounge options are limited compared to other major hubs.

Traveler notes

  • The MIA Mover is a free automated people-mover connecting Concourses D through H to the Miami Intermodal Center. It runs 24h and takes about 3 min.
  • US Customs and Border Protection at MIA can be very slow during peak international arrival windows, typically mid-morning. Add 30-60 min buffer for re-entry if you are a non-US citizen.
  • Global Entry kiosks and Mobile Passport Control are available in Concourse E for eligible US citizens and Global Entry members.

Sleep / Rest

  • No sleep pods or nap zones airside. Seating is available throughout the concourses.
  • Miami Airport Marriott is connected via the MIA Mover and adjacent skywalk, accessible without leaving the secure area on the landside. Practical for very long layovers.

Food

  • Cafe Versailles Express (Concourse D): Cuban pastelitos, croquetas, and cafecito for under $12. Consistently the best quick bite in the airport and walkable from most international gates.
  • Zaza Cuban Cafe: similar Cuban comfort food, available in multiple concourses.
  • Full-service dining available in the main terminal landside after clearing customs.

Showers

  • AA Admirals Club and Flagship Lounge have showers for members and day pass holders.
  • No pay-per-use showers outside lounges.

Luggage Storage

  • Smarte Carte left luggage in baggage claim areas. Rates around $6-8 per item per hour up to a daily maximum. Confirm rates at the cart.
  • Bounce partner locations in Miami offer off-airport storage at lower daily rates.

Transit to City

  • Metrorail via MIA Mover: Free people-mover to Miami Intermodal Center, then free shuttle or short walk to Earlington Heights Metrorail station. About 20-25 min to Brickell or downtown Government Center. Fare $2.25, trains every 15 min.
  • Taxi: $30-45 to Brickell/downtown, 20-30 min without traffic. $35-55 to South Beach; the bridge crossing can add 10-20 min in traffic.
  • Ride-share: Similar to taxi; check for surge pricing, especially during cruise ship arrivals and events.
  • Return buffer: Leave 2.5-3h before international departure. CBP re-entry lines at MIA are long at peak.

Essentials

  • Visa: US entry rules apply. ESTA ($21, valid 2 years) covers Visa Waiver Program nationalities. US visa required for others; apply well in advance.
  • Wi-Fi: Free throughout.
  • Currency: USD. ATMs throughout. Decline dynamic currency conversion.
  • SIM/eSIM: Phone shops and kiosks in the main terminal sell US SIMs. An eSIM before arrival saves time and money.
  • Prayer/faith rooms: Available; ask at the information desk.

Fast City Hit (6-9h)

  • MIA Mover to Miami Intermodal Center, then Metrorail to Brickell City Centre (about 25 min total). Walk the Brickell waterfront or Bayside Marketplace nearby. A quick lunch, then back. Leave 3h before departure.

Longer City Hit (10h+)

  • Brickell or downtown lunch, then taxi across the MacArthur Causeway to South Beach (about 20 min). Ocean Drive and Lincoln Road are a short walk from the drop-off. Leave South Beach at least 3h before your departure to account for traffic across the causeway and MIA Customs processing.
