Snapshot
KLIA splits into two separate buildings: T1 for legacy and full-service carriers, T2 for AirAsia and other low-cost airlines. Both use the same express rail line but are otherwise separate terminals. Clean, well-signed, and straightforward to navigate. The Ekspres train does the 28-minute run to KL Sentral, which makes 8 hours enough for a workable city stop.

Traveler notes
- T1 and T2 share the same rail line but are physically separate buildings. Confirm your terminal before leaving airside.
- The Ekspres runs until around 12:45 AM; late overnight departures from T1 may require a taxi back.
- Malaysia is hot and humid year-round. Build that into any outdoor city plan.
Sleep / Rest
- Ambassador Transit Hotel (T1 Satellite, post-security): day rooms and overnight rooms, showers included. Book ahead for long layovers.
- GoSleep Pods available in T1 landside for short naps.
- Open seating throughout; no dedicated airside rest zones.
Food
- T1 Satellite (airside): Malaysian stalls serving nasi lemak, laksa, and roti canai. Mains in the RM15-30 range.
- T1 and T2: International chains across both terminals.
- T2: Fewer options than T1; the Plaza Premium buffet is the best sit-down choice airside in T2.
Showers
- Plaza Premium Lounges in T1 and T2 include showers with paid access.
- Ambassador Transit Hotel sells shower-only packages when rooms are available.
Luggage Storage
- Left luggage counters in T1 arrivals (landside). Also available in T2.
- About RM20-40 per item per day; confirm rates at the counter.
Transit to City
- KLIA Ekspres (T1): 28 min non-stop to KL Sentral. RM55 one-way. Every 15-20 min, roughly 5:00 AM to 12:45 AM.
- KLIA Ekspres (T2): same service with one additional stop, 33 min, same fare.
- From KL Sentral: LRT, MRT, monorail, and KTM Komuter connect to the rest of the city.
- Grab/Taxi: 60-90 min to city center, about RM80-130 depending on traffic and expressway tolls.
- Return buffer: Allow 2.5-3h before departure (rail back + check-in + security).
Essentials
- Transit visa: Most nationalities can transit airside without a visa. To exit landside and enter Malaysia, check your passport requirements before travel. Malaysia admits many nationalities visa-free but verify before you go.
- Wi-Fi: Free throughout T1 and T2.
- Currency: Malaysian Ringgit (MYR). ATMs throughout both terminals. Decline dynamic currency conversion.
- SIM/eSIM: Available at airport shops. An eSIM purchased before arrival is typically cheaper.
- Prayer rooms: Available on multiple floors in both T1 and T2.
Fast City Hit (6-9h)
- Ekspres to KL Sentral (28 min), then Grab or LRT to Bukit Bintang or KLCC. The Petronas Twin Towers observation deck requires advance booking; skip it without one. The exterior and KLCC Park are free and worth the visit.
- Leave the city no later than 3h before your departure flight.
Longer City Hit (10h+)
- KLCC and Chinatown (Petaling Street) via LRT from KLCC to Pasar Seni is doable in sequence.
- Batu Caves: about 30 min by KTM Komuter from KL Sentral; feasible with 12h but adds real travel time. Check the return schedule before committing.
- Leave 3h before departure from the city.
