Getting from ATH to Athens

Metro Line 3 (Blue) runs direct from the airport to Syntagma Square in 40 minutes, costs €9, and departs every 30 minutes between 5:30am and 11:30pm. Outside those hours, the Express Bus X95 covers the same route 24/7 for €6, but count on 60 to 90 minutes depending on traffic. Both options put you within walking distance of the Acropolis area.

Inside the terminal

ATH operates as a single main terminal and is easy to navigate. There are lounges accessible to eligible passengers and walk-in guests, a solid range of cafes and restaurants airside, and duty-free retail. Nothing exceptional, but it’s clean and functional.

Layovers and connections at ATH

Do not plan to leave the airport on anything under 6 hours. Add up 25 minutes of transit, 45 minutes through immigration, and 35 minutes of security buffer on the return, and you’re already at 105 minutes of pure logistics before spending a single minute in Athens. That’s before accounting for the return transit leg. Non-Schengen queues can push well past 45 minutes when morning Gulf and Asian flights land at the same time. With 6 to 10 hours, you have a real window: enough time to reach Syntagma, walk toward the Acropolis, eat a proper meal, and get back without rushing. With 10 or more hours, you can actually pace yourself.

Practical notes

Automated eGates are available for UK, US, Canadian, Japanese, Australian, and New Zealand passport holders, as well as Schengen travelers, which cuts immigration time considerably if you qualify. The local currency is the euro. ATMs are available inside the terminal near arrivals.
