Incheon International Airport sits on a reclaimed island about 48 km west of central Seoul, and it is regularly rated among the world’s best airports. As the main hub for Korean Air and Asiana, it handles the bulk of South Korea’s international traffic, but it is also a genuine destination in its own right, packed with culture, gardens and around-the-clock facilities.
The AREX Airport Railroad is the simplest route into the city. The nonstop express train reaches Seoul Station in about 43 minutes from Terminal 1 and roughly 51 minutes from Terminal 2, running from early morning until nearly midnight. The cheaper all-stop commuter train takes a little longer. Airport limousine buses and taxis are also available if you are heading somewhere off the rail line.
The free Korean Culture Museum and Experience Center is the standout, where you can try on a hanbok, fold fans and learn calligraphy at no cost. Elsewhere you will find landscaped indoor gardens, an ice skating rink in the Transportation Center, the Spa on Air jjimjilbang, a CGV cinema, private sleeping rooms and vast duty-free halls. For longer waits, the airport runs free transit tours into nearby Incheon and Seoul for passengers with several hours to spare.
Because immigration and the train add up quickly, aim for at least five to six hours before leaving the airport, and closer to seven if you want to reach central Seoul comfortably. South Korea offers visa-free entry to many nationalities, so check your eligibility first. If your layover is shorter, the in-terminal attractions alone make the wait pass easily.
