Getting from FLL to Fort Lauderdale

The fastest option is Brightline, which connects FLL to Downtown Miami’s MiamiCentral in 35 minutes from $21, with trains running roughly every 60 minutes. Budget travelers can take Tri-Rail to Miami Airport Station in 50 minutes for $3.75, then transfer to the Orange Line Metrorail into Downtown Miami. Both options get you out of the airport without fighting for a taxi, though add a few minutes for the walk to ground transportation when you’re planning your time.

Inside the terminal

FLL runs four terminals in a horseshoe layout. They’re compact and easy to get around, but connections between terminals require going back through security. Food and retail are standard airport fare. Wi-Fi is free throughout. Lounge access depends on your airline and ticket class.

Layovers and connections at FLL

Under 3 hours, stay in the airport. The numbers close in fast: 35 minutes of transit each way, up to 45 minutes through immigration on an international arrival, and a 35-minute security buffer before your next flight. That math leaves no room for delays, and delays happen. Three to 6 hours gives you a workable window for Fort Lauderdale’s beach or a walk along Las Olas. Six hours or more and Brightline puts you in Miami with genuine time to use it.

Practical notes

Mobile Passport Control is available in Terminal 3, which can shave meaningful time off your immigration wait if you qualify. Non-US citizen queues tend to spike on evening arrivals, so earlier flights are easier if you have the choice.
