Your layover plan

Arrive & Immigration
~20 min · ANC
  • Follow signs to passport control immediately on landing
  • Have onward boarding pass and hotel/address ready for questions
  • Most ANC traffic is domestic US, so immigration only applies to the limited international arrivals (seasonal Asia cargo, select summer European charters). Global Entry kiosks available. Verify before travel, rules change.
Transit into the city
20 min

People Mover Route 40 bus from the lower level to downtown 5th Ave in about 30 min, $2.50 one-way. Taxi or rideshare from the ground transport curb runs 15 to 20 min, roughly $25 to $30 metered. Free shuttles connect the South (main) and North (regional) terminals.

We recommend staying airside for a 3-6 hour layover at ANC. The airport is small and clean with decent dining options. If you have e-gate clearance and immigration moves fast, a taxi to downtown takes 20 minutes - but the reward is limited for the time spent.
Return to ANC
20 min back to airport
  • Leave enough buffer - trains run to a schedule and can be delayed
  • Buy your return ticket in advance if possible
  • Set an alarm 65 min before your departure gate closes
Back through security
~45 min buffer before gate
  • Re-entry security at ANC typically takes 10-20 min
  • Check your gate - it may have changed while you were out
  • Liquids bought in the city cannot pass security - finish or bin them
