Your layover plan

Arrive & Immigration
~45 min · SHA
  • Follow signs to passport control immediately on landing
  • Have onward boarding pass and hotel/address ready for questions
  • Hongqiao handles mostly domestic flights with limited international routes (Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea). Immigration lines are usually faster than at PVG.
Transit into the city
45 min

Metro Line 2 runs directly from SHA Terminal 2 to East Nanjing Road (The Bund) in about 45 min, ¥5. Line 10 is a slightly faster alternative for stops in the west of the city.

Explore Shanghai
~1h 25m of free time
From SHA: Metro Line 10 to Jing'an Temple or Laowai Jie area in 30 minutes (CNY 5). The Jing'an area has good cafes, the Jing'an Temple (CNY 50 entry), and walkable streets. From PVG: the round trip to the Bund takes 110 to 130 minutes leaving very little usable time; consider staying close to Longyang Road area instead. Allow 2 hours departure buffer for re-entry security.
Return to SHA
45 min back to airport
  • Leave enough buffer - trains run to a schedule and can be delayed
  • Buy your return ticket in advance if possible
  • Set an alarm 95 min before your departure gate closes
Back through security
~50 min buffer before gate
  • Re-entry security at SHA typically takes 10-20 min
  • Check your gate - it may have changed while you were out
  • Liquids bought in the city cannot pass security - finish or bin them
