Istanbul Airport (IST) is Turkey’s vast main gateway, opened in 2019 on the European side near the Black Sea coast. As the home hub of Turkish Airlines and one of the busiest airports on earth, it connects hundreds of cities across six continents. Its scale, art programme, and museum make it worth exploring even before you head into the city.

The M11 metro is the fastest link, reaching Gayrettepe in about 35 minutes for roughly 40 TRY with an Istanbulkart; there you transfer to the M2 line for Taksim or the historic peninsula, around 45 to 60 minutes total. Trains run about every 8 to 10 minutes from 6am to midnight. The Havaist bus runs 24 hours and takes 60 to 110 minutes depending on your destination, useful for late-night arrivals. Taxis reach the centre in 45 to 60 minutes outside peak traffic.
The terminal is a destination in itself. The Istanbul Airport Museum on the international departures floor shows hundreds of artifacts on loan from museums across Turkey. Through the iGA ART programme, corridors become galleries filled with sculptures and digital installations. The iGA Lounge, a Skytrax five-star hall, offers a rare outdoor terrace, while Yotel cabins provide airside sleep and showers. Expect extensive Turkish dining, duty-free, and pharmacies.
To leave and see the city, give yourself a comfortable buffer. Passport control can be busy, and the metro plus transfers eat up time, so a layover of at least six to seven hours makes a quick visit realistic. For shorter stops, the museum, galleries, and lounges keep you occupied airside. Remember most nationalities can enter Turkey visa-free or with an e-visa, so check your status before planning to exit.
