What we'd tell a friend

Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND) sits in Ota, on Tokyo Bay just south of the city center, making it the closer and more convenient of the capital’s two major gateways. It handles huge domestic and international traffic, yet its terminals are a genuine destination in their own right, blending sleek modern design with recreated old-Japan charm.

Getting to Tokyo

The Keikyu Line runs from Terminal 3 to Shinagawa in about 13 minutes, where you can change to the JR Yamanote Line for Shinjuku, roughly 45 minutes total. The Tokyo Monorail reaches Hamamatsucho in around 18 minutes for a Yamanote connection. Both cost only 600 to 710 yen, and taxis or airport limousine buses are handy for late arrivals.

Inside the terminal

Terminal 3’s Edo Koji recreates a 17th-century Edo street with red Kanda-style shrine pillars, a fortified tower and a mock kabuki theater built under a Kabuki actor’s supervision, ringed by sushi, yakitori and vegan restaurants. Rooftop observation decks in each terminal offer runway views across four runways, and Terminal 2’s Stardust Stage glows with about 4,000 LED lights after dark. You can also visit the Starry Café planetarium and browse Tokyo Pop Town.

Layovers and connections

Because central Tokyo is so close, even a five to six hour layover can allow a quick city trip, though you should budget time for immigration and re-clearing security. For shorter stops, the in-terminal attractions and observation decks easily fill a few hours.

Use the tools above to check whether your layover is long enough to leave, and how the transit, immigration, and security timings add up for HND.
