Hanoi Layover Guide: What to Do at Hanoi Airport

Is it worth leaving the airport?
- Leave with 6+ hours. Under that, stay airside.
- Visa: Check Vietnam visa/VOA/e-visa rules; some nationalities need an e-visa in advance.
- Luggage: Arrivals storage if available; plan to travel light.
- Transit: 35-60 minutes to Old Quarter by taxi/app.
3-5 hours: stay airside
Grab a bowl of pho or snacks, coffee, lounge for showers/Wi‑Fi. Gate 40 minutes before boarding.
6-9 hours: Old Quarter loop
Taxi/app to Hoan Kiem Lake. Walk the lake and Old Quarter streets. Eat pho, bun cha, or banh mi (~$5-8 USD / 120,000-190,000 VND). Vietnamese coffee at a local café. Leave 3-4 hours before departure.
10+ hours: add Temple of Literature exterior
After the lake/Old Quarter, taxi to the Temple of Literature exterior for a quick look, or a short stroll in the French Quarter. Return with buffer.
