Sultanahmet sights, simit and tea, and a return to IST with a buffer.

Is it worth leaving the airport?

• Leave with 7+ hours (traffic can be heavy). Under that, stay airside.
• Visa: Many nationalities need an e-visa; some are visa-free. If not eligible, stay airside.
• Luggage: Arrivals storage; verify at IST.
• Transit: 35-60 minutes to Sultanahmet by taxi/metro combo; traffic varies.

3-5 hours: stay airside

Turkish coffee, simit, lounge for showers. Gate 40 minutes before boarding.

6-9 hours: Sultanahmet loop

Taxi/metro to Sultanahmet. View Hagia Sophia/Blue Mosque exteriors, a quick walk through the square. Snack on simit/döner. Leave 4 hours before departure to buffer traffic and security.

10+ hours: add Grand Bazaar exterior/short visit

After Sultanahmet, a quick bazaar loop if time; keep it tight. Return with a generous buffer.

Getting there and back

• Taxi: ~$25-40 USD / 750-1200 TRY; 35-60+ minutes depending on traffic.
• Metro + tram: Cheaper but can be slower; use only if confident and time allows.

Money and budget

• Currency: TRY; cards common; carry some cash.
• 6-9h: ~$45-60 USD / 1350-1800 TRY (rides, snack/coffee).
• 10h+: ~$60-80 USD / 1800-2400 TRY (rides, meals, extras).

Logistics and safety

• Immigration: Allow time; e-visa if required.
• Storage: Available in arrivals.
• Return: Back at IST 3h before departure; add for traffic/security.
• Safety: Sultanahmet is touristy; normal awareness.

If you stay airside

• Lounges: IST lounges with full food/showers.
• Food: Turkish specialties, coffee/tea, fast options.
• Rest: Lounges best.
