Flight Connection Mastery
Smart connections at a glance
Build buffers, pick friendly hubs, and protect yourself from misconnects.
How much buffer?
- Domestic–domestic: aim 1.5–2 hours at large hubs, 1 hour minimum at smaller airports.
- International–domestic: 2–3 hours (passport control + security + bags).
- International–international: 2.5–3+ hours if re-clear security/immigration; more if separate tickets.
Choose better hubs
- Efficient layouts/train connections beat bus gates and terminal changes.
- Avoid chronic-delay hubs for tight turns; use historical on-time stats when possible.
- Overnight bank? Pick hubs with airside hotels/lounges open late.
Single vs. separate tickets
- One ticket: airline owns the misconnect; they rebook you.
- Separate tickets: you own the risk; add bigger buffers or avoid checking bags.
- Consider travel insurance that covers missed connections.
Bag strategy
- Carry-on only for tight connects; checked bags can miss short turns.
- If checking bags on separate tickets, add 3–4+ hours or overnight.
Day-of tactics
- Check gate/terminal on landing; use airport trains, not shuttles, when possible.
- Ask for short-connection security lanes where available.
- If a delay threatens your next leg, talk to the airline early from the inbound plane/Wi‑Fi.
