Is it worth leaving the airport?
- Leave with 6+ hours. Under that, stay airside.
- Visa: US, UK, EU, Canada, Australia enter visa-free. Others must meet Mexico entry rules.
- Luggage: Arrivals storage, about $10 USD / 180 MXN per day.
- Transit: 25-45 minutes to Hotel Zone by taxi/app; bus is slower.
3-5 hours: stay airside
Tacos or tortas, coffee, and a lounge (Plaza Premium, Mera) for showers/Wi‑Fi. Gate 40 minutes before boarding.
6-9 hours: beach and tacos
Taxi/app to the Hotel Zone (Playa Gaviota Azul or Delfines). Short beach walk or swim if conditions allow. Tacos at El Galeón del Caribe or sit-down at Mextreme. Leave 4 hours before departure.
10+ hours: add Mercado 23 or La Isla
After the beach, go downtown to Mercado 23 for local snacks, or stay in the Zone and stroll La Isla Shopping Village. Taxi back with a generous buffer.
Getting there and back
- Taxi/App: $20-35 USD / 360-630 MXN; 25-45 minutes. Official airport taxis cost more.
- ADO bus: ~$6 USD / 110 MXN to downtown; then taxi to Hotel Zone (slower overall).
Money and budget
- Currency: MXN; cards widely accepted in Hotel Zone; carry 200-400 MXN cash.
- 6-9h: ~$62 USD / 1,115 MXN (rides, food, drinks/snack).
- 10h+: ~$85-95 USD / 1,530-1,710 MXN (rides, food, extras).
Logistics and safety
- Immigration: Often 15-30 minutes; can spike in peak season.
- Storage: ~$10 USD / 180 MXN per day in arrivals.
- Return: Back at CUN 3h before intl, 2h domestic; add for peak season traffic.
- Safety: Hotel Zone is patrolled; downtown is fine in daylight. Watch belongings on the beach.
