Is it worth leaving the airport?

• Leave with 6+ hours. Under that, stay airside.
• Visa: US, UK, EU, Canada, Australia visa-waived. Others must meet NZ entry rules.
• Luggage: SmarteCarte storage in arrivals, about $12-20 USD / 20-35 NZD per day.
• Transit: 40-60 minutes to CBD by SkyDrive bus or taxi; add buffer for traffic.

3-5 hours: stay airside

Coffee at Hangar, a bagel at Best Ugly, or lounge time at Strata for showers. Buy honey or chocolate, and be at the gate 40 minutes before boarding.

6-9 hours: waterfront and fish and chips

Bus or taxi to Viaduct Harbour/Wynyard Quarter. Walk the boardwalk, watch the boats. Fish and chips at The Brewers Co-Op (budget) or a nearby sit-down. Coffee at Eighthirty. Leave the CBD 4 hours before departure.

10+ hours: add Mt Eden or Auckland Museum

Do the waterfront, then taxi to Mt Eden for skyline views, or swap for a quick Auckland Museum visit at the Domain. Lunch near SkyCity (Depot Eatery), then return with a solid buffer.

Getting there and back

• SkyDrive bus: $14 USD / 24 NZD one-way, $23 USD / 40 NZD return; ~40-50 minutes; frequent.
• Taxi/rideshare: $38-50 USD / 65-85 NZD to CBD; 35-50 minutes off-peak.

Money and budget

• Currency: NZD; cards widely accepted.
• 6-9h: ~$53 USD / 94 NZD (bus return, meal, coffee/snack).
• 10h+: ~$118 USD / 204 NZD (bus+taxi, meals, museum/coffee).
