Is it worth leaving the airport?

  • Leave with 6+ hours. Under that, stay airside.
  • Visa: US, UK, EU, Canada, Australia visa-free/visa-waived for short visits; others must meet UK rules.
  • Luggage: Arrivals storage about $10-12 USD / 8-10 GBP per day.
  • Transit: 30-40 minutes to the center by tram or Airlink bus; taxi slightly faster off-peak.

3-5 hours: stay airside

Sandwiches, coffee, lounge if you need a shower. Gate 40 minutes before boarding.

6-9 hours: Royal Mile loop

Tram/bus to city. Walk from St Giles’ area along the Royal Mile, see the Castle esplanade exterior. Grab a pie or quick fish and chips (~$14 USD / 12 GBP). Coffee at a local café. Leave 3 hours before departure.

10+ hours: add Calton Hill

After Royal Mile, walk or taxi to Calton Hill for a city view. Return with buffer.
