Is it worth leaving the airport?

  • Leave with 7+ hours. Under that, stay airside.
  • Visa: Many nationalities are visa-free/waived for short visits; check if you need a visa.
  • Luggage: Storage at HND/NRT arrivals; use lockers or counters.
  • Transit: HND to central ~20-30 minutes by train/monorail; NRT to central ~50-70 minutes by Narita Express/Skyliner.

3-5 hours: stay airside

Ramen, sushi, coffee; use a lounge for showers/Wi‑Fi. Gate 40 minutes before boarding.

6-9 hours: Shibuya or Asakusa

HND: Take train/monorail to Shibuya for the crossing and Hachiko, quick ramen or conveyor-belt sushi. NRT: Skyliner/Narita Express to Ueno/Asakusa for Senso-ji exterior, Nakamise snacks. Leave 3-4 hours before departure to buffer trains/security.

10+ hours: add Harajuku or Ginza

After Shibuya, hop to Harajuku’s Takeshita Street or Meiji Shrine exterior. From Asakusa, swing by Ginza for a coffee stop. Return with a large buffer for train time and security.

Getting there and back

  • HND: Keikyu/Monorail to central ~20-30 minutes.
  • NRT: Skyliner/Narita Express ~50-70 minutes to central.
  • Taxi: Expensive and slower; use only if necessary.

Money and budget

  • Currency: JPY; cards widely accepted, carry some cash for small shops.
  • 6-9h: ~¥5,000-8,000 (trains, meal/snack).
  • 10h+: ~¥7,000-12,000 (trains + extras/meals).

Logistics and safety

  • Immigration: Can be quick or slow; allow time.
  • Storage: Lockers/counters at both airports.
  • Return: Back at airport 2h domestic, 3h international; add train time.
  • Safety: Very safe; normal awareness, mind crosswalk signals.

  • Lounges: Multiple at HND/NRT; showers/food.
  • Food: Ramen, sushi, convenience-store snacks.
  • Rest: Lounges best; nap pods in some terminals.
